Dehumidifiers regulate humidity by removing moisture from the air, thereby creating living conditions that are inhospitable to dust mites and mold. Traditional dehumidifiers work much like air conditioners; they cool the air, causing moisture to condense on coils within the machine. The moisture is collected in a drip pan or bucket for disposal.
One must make certain that the dehumidifier has automatic defrost (freeze control).
This ensures maximum moisture removal with no off time for manual defrost. Compare this to not having a frost free refrigerator. Better dehumidifiers have:
- Adjustable humidity control.
- Auto signal light to know when the dehumidifier is operating.
- Auto shut off so that when the drain pan is full the dehumidifier will shut off.
- Threaded hose connection on the drain pan. This allows for a hose to be simply attached to the dehumidifier and run to a drain opening.
- Automatic reset, so that once the drain pan has been emptied, the dehumidifier will start without pressing buttons etc.
- Adjustable humidistat (30 to 80%).
- Deodorizing filter if required.
